Kulusuk to Tasiilaq

The entire time we were here, everyone always said “eastern” Greenland.  Eastern Greenland is the most isolated inhabited area of the world. It is between the Greenland ice cap and the Arctic sea ice. It’s an area of steep, dramatic mountains, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, streams, rivers, icebergs, and a wildly indented coastline. Eastern Greenland has about 3,500 inhabitants.

The eastern coast of Greenland is about 1,700 miles long and has two small towns and five small villages. We visited one of the towns and one of the villages.

We flew from Iceland and landed in the village of Kulusuk because it has the only airport in eastern Greenland. We then traveled directly from the airport to Tasiilaq via helicopter.

We exited our plane, picked up our luggage on the edge of the runway and then boarded the helicopter on the left side.

This is the Kulusuk airport runway. It's dirt and gravel but it was a very smooth landing and taking off runway.

This is the end of the Kulusuk runway. The plane needs to get up in a bit of a hurry.

This was our first view of Tasiilaq as we came in for a landing in our helicopter. We felt much better about Greenland then.

Vicky got to ride shotgun for the 10 minute ride from Kulusuk to Tasiilaq so the photos above were her photos.

ARE YOU READY TO GO TO GREENLAND?

Vicky, my wife, and I went from Iceland to Greenland.  We were in eastern Greenland from August 30th to September 2nd  2016, so it was a short trip but very interesting.

Greenland is an autonomous country within the Danish realm. It is the world’s largest island and located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. Geographically, it is part of North America but politically and culturally, it has been part of Europe for over a millennium.

About 80% of Greenland is covered with a permanent ice sheet. Despite being inhabited for at least 4,500 years, Greenland is the least densely populated country in the world. Greenland has about 56,000 people in an area equivalent to about 22% of the size of the United States.

So get ready for a short but highly entertaining adventure. This first photo gives you a hint about eastern Greenland.

We stayed at both Tasiilaq and Kulusuk. The dashed line that you see is the Arctic Circle. We were about 65 miles from it.

What does eastern Greenland look like at the end of August? You certainly don't see much green, that's for sure.

As we got closer to landing, it didn't look any greener.

We landed in Kulusuk on a dirt runway. We walked across the dirt and picked up our luggage. I was standing right here and my mind suddenly recalled the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". I remembered the scene where Butch, Sundance and Etta Place get off the train in Bolivia. As I felt the arctic wind sting my face and dust sandblasting me, I thought, "This could be the garden spot of Greenland"....
